c.       Student Success Day- We will be presenting two 50 minute workshops. Please be at one if not both.

VIII.      Advisor Antics

Kent- A mans penis is three times the length of his thumb. A women’s heart beats faster than a mans. There are one trillion bacteria on each foot. It takes 300 muscles to balance standing still. If saliva can’t dissolve something, you can’t taste what you’re trying to taste. Women will be done reading this by now. Men will still be checking out their thumbs.

Roger- The speed of light is 886 something a second. On this day in 1837, the first Vice President was chosen (Richard Johnson…no relation to Roger…or myself! Ha!) Always remember that you are unique…just like everybody else.

IX.      Be Our Guest

Dr. Johns and Mark Winson discussed several things with us:

1. Website Organization- They would like our thoughts on how to make the LSC Website more user friendly, effective, and efficient. The goal is to make portals nicer. They are aiming at a one e-mail a week system (what a coincidence! So are we!). Our thoughts: Changing appearance is hard on students-in regards to layout. No campus advertisements. Class cancellations should be on the homepage. The mobile version of LSC has no ads on it, but the portal does.

2. Budget- FY11 Budget looks good. FY12 Budget is being decided.

3. Tuition- Tuition increased 5% from last year to this year. He went over tuition and differential tuition increases.

4. Tech fee- The technology fee is currently $10 and they do not plan to increase that. The change to HDMI will happen soon.

5. Dr. Johns introduces Gary Kruchowski. Gary says that there will be up to six faculty attending Duluth Days.

6. Strategic Planning- All three of our guests talk about the new line of command. They emphasize that nothing is forever and things can change.

X.      New Business

a.       Strategic Planning Open Forum- Tomorrow at noon in the Large Administrative Conference Room. Please come if you can.

XI.      Announcements

a.       BWW tomorrow between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Bring the slip that’s on the Senate desk!

b.      Senator Reports

There are no Senator Reports.

c.       Committee Reports

·         Student Life and Legacy- Malec reports that the funding for the architect for the study area outside was approved for $2500.

·         Food Service- Brian reports that the main mission right now for this committee is implementing a salad bar. The committee has a plan on where it will go and stuff.

VII.      Unfinished Business

a.       Review of Student Success Day- We did two presentations; there were about 10 students in each (which was good compared to Paula’s numbers). Ideas for next time: A survey in the morning to build upon in the afternoon, have a table, not so many Senators standing up front.

b.       Review of Rally Day- Thanks to everyone who went down. Next time there will be a better game plan on how to get more students to go. But kudos to the ones who tried hard.

c.       Review of Twin Ports Leadership Project- This all campus committee finds out that it would be cheaper to host this event at UMD. We would prefer it at a neutral location. Matthew suggested looking at conference rooms in hospitals. Katherine suggested looking at rooms in libraries. The event will take place on April 6, and is a conference for high school students on how to make leadership transition easier into college. The next meeting is Monday at 6 at UMD.

d.       Day of Service- The Day of Service will be March 2 from 11 to 1 in the commons. Students will be able to make PB&J sandwiches for the homeless and themselves.

e.       Talking Circles- The next Talking Circles is Feb. 22 from 11 to 1. Please attend to hear students’ concerns. There will be at least three Senators attending.

VIII.      Advisor Antics

Roger- There has been a change in how checks are reimbursed at the business office. It could be up to a week before your reimbursement check comes. Judi apologizes that there is no same day service anymore.

Ø  It takes 42 muscles to frown, and 4 to extend your arm and slap somebody.

Ø  One out of four people is mentally imbalanced. Think of three of your closest friends. If they seem OK, then it’s you.

Ø  The Frisbee kept getting bigger and bigger. Then it hit me.

Ø  Some people are like Slinkys; they’re really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

Kent- An elderly man in Louisiana owned a farm with a large pond in the back. The pond was in bad shape, so he fixed it up. One day, he decided to go down to the pond to look it over and make sure it was doing alright. He brought a 5 gallon bucket to load with fruit from the trees that were down there. When he got to the pond, he saw some women skinny dipping. They saw him and told him that they’re not coming out until he leaves. He said that was fine, he only came down to feed the alligator. Moral: Some old men can still think fast.

IX.      New Business

a.       MSCSA Governing Council- The next GC will be March 4-6 in Fergus Falls. Let Roger or Chandra know by Tuesday if you are able to attend. (Already 10 Senators have said they will go. We may set a record!)

b.       Search Committee- The search committee for a Medical Laboratory Technician needs a student. Let Chandra know if you can sit on this.

c.       Judicial Panel- Students who are being disciplined have the option of standing in front of this panel and pleading their case. There is an opening for two students. The first meeting is Friday from 1 to 4.

d.       Senate Campus Agenda- Chandra brings up the idea of having a written down stance on certain issues so new future Senators know where to stand and what to work on. Everyone thinks this is a good idea.

X.      Announcements

a.       Malec will be training in new Senators next week.

b.       Please sign up for an office hour.

c.       We will be rescheduling the meeting with Dr. Johns that was supposed to be March 8.

d.       LSC Open House is April 15.

e.       MSCSA General Assembly will be April 15-17.
